Apr 23, 2012 No Comments by

On April 22nd, 2012, Xinhua News Agency launched a joint media campaign with UNEP, UNFCCC, UNCCD, and Reuters aimed at promoting environmental awareness. The launch purposefully coincided with international celebrations of Earth Day.

The campaign is designed to raise public awareness and understanding of environmental protection and sustainable development. In the shadow of the upcoming climate negotiations at Rio+20 in June, the campaign partners have identified an opportunity to further global understanding of the common environmental problems facing mankind. On several key dates between Earth Day and Rio+20, the media campaign will provide multimedia reporting and photo exhibitions highlighting the state of the environment and the prospects for sustainable development.

The current international news climate is dominated by economic struggles in North American and the Euro Zone. With Rio+20 less than two months away, the Xinhua-led initiative will attempt to bring environmental issues back to the forefront of international thought in order to positively inform policy-makers and voters alike.
