This summer Anamarija Frankic, assistant professor of coastal ecosystem management at UMass-Boston and Director of the Green Boston Harbor Project, worked with local youth to clean up the ocean right next door. Bridging academia and practice, Anamarija teaches biomimicry and leads Boston youth in summer volunteer projects to clean the harbor and learn about the environment.

Anamarija has created opportunities to engage her students with real-life problems and concrete solutions. This summer, she worked on a boat at the UMass docks that pumped 1,500 gallons of sewage from pleasure boats in Marina Bay, planted clam seeds at Thompson Island and led 14 environmentally minded teenagers from Hyde Park on a canoe trip down the Neponset River.

The Green Boston Harbor Project is an initiative housed at the Center for Governance and Sustainability at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Center is co-directed by Dr. Maria Ivanova and Dr. Craig Murphy.

An interview with GEG Project Director Maria Ivanova on Engaging Civil Society in Global Environmental Governance was recently published on The New Security Beat, a blog maintained by the staff of the Environmental Change and Security Program (ECSP) at the Woodrow Wilson Center. A momentum has started to build behind the idea of global environmental governance, much thanks to the involvement of various civil society groups and the dialogue between environmental policy makers and academia. Civil society have demanded a more substantial role in the design and execution of environmental policy, and there are signs that environmental leaders at the international level are listening. Read the full interview with Maria Ivanova on the future prospects for GEG, Rio+20 and how the environment-development dicothomy can be reframed through bold leadership and a mobilized civil society.
